Welcome to Engineering Secure Systems!

We are a sub-institute of the KASTEL Institute and research the Helmholtz Topic ESS. The Topic ESS is one of the four Topics in the EDF (Engineering Digital Futures) program in the Helmholtz Research Field Information. We are 23 senior researchers and about 50 collaborators from different disciplines with the common goal to advance the development of secure systems for critical infrastructure.

We rely on highly interdisciplinary research to quantify security in order to find the best possible trade-offs between security goals and other requirements. We combine basic research with concrete applications of cybersecurity in the areas of future energy, mobility and production systems. As part of the Helmholtz Association, we are united by the mission to solve the major challenges facing society, science and industry and to help shape our future by combining research and technology development with innovative application and supply perspectives for tomorrow's world.
